Abstract
An alcohol is prepared by contacting a gaseous mixture of an olefin and water at elevated temperature and pressure with a catalyst comprising an aqueous solution of phosphoric acid, having a concentration of at least 70 per cent, supported on a porous diatomaceous material, the diatom skeletons of which are coated with silica gel (see Group III). The reaction may be carried out at a temperature of 250-350 DEG C., a pressure of at least 500 lb. per sq. in., and a mol. ratio of water to olefin of between 0.3 and 1. During the reaction, minor amounts of aqueous phosphoric acid may be added to the catalyst. The alcohol is condensed out from the gaseous product, the remaining gases being mixed with more olefin and water vapour and recycled. Olefins derived from the thermal or catalytic cracking of petroleum hydrocarbons may be hydrated. In examples, ethylene is converted to ethyl alcohol. Specification 651,275 is referred to.ALSO:Catalyst for the hydration of olefins to alcohols (see Group IV (b)) comprises an aqueous solution of phosphoric acid supported on porous inert diatomaceous material, the diatom skeletons of which are coated with silica gel; the catalyst is prepared by saturating the diatomaceous material with a strong aqueous solution of phosphoric acid, heating in an atmosphere containing water vapour, digesting with acidified hot water having a pH of less than about 1.0, washing with hot water, drying, and then impregnating with aqueous phosphoric acid solution. The water vapour present during the heating step has a partial pressure, e.g. 50-500 mm. mercury, which is less than the partial pressure of water vapour in equilibrium with the phosphoric acid solution. Heating may be carried out at a temperature of 150-400 DEG C. and at atmospheric, increased, or reduced pressure. The digestion with acidified water, which may take place at above 85 DEG C., dissolves out metal phosphates and hydrolyses silicyl phosphate to silica gel; in Example (I) the digestion is repeated. The carrier is preferably in the form of granules or pellets. The final impregnation may be carried out with a 55-65 per cent aqueous phosphoric acid solution, the acid then being concentrated to above 70 per cent in situ before use. Specification 651,275, [Group IV (b)], is referred to.
