Abstract

1371905 Olefin hydration catalysts BP CHEMICALS INTERNATIONAL Ltd 21 July 1972 [27 July 1971] 35211/71 Heading B1E [Also in Division C2] Olefin, hydration catalyst comprises porous silica gel support impregnated wtih phosphoric acid, the catalyst being free from added Group II metal or compound thereof and the silica gel support (a) being chemically stable to aqueous solutions and mechanically stable to steam at temperatures up to 320‹C, (b) having a surface area of less than 200 m<SP>2</SP>/g and a pore volume of from 0.80 to 2.2 cm<SP>2</SP>/g and, preferably, (c) containing, by weight, at least 99.0 per cent silica, not more than 0.5 per cent alumina, not more than 0.1 per cent sodium oxide and not more than 0.03 per cent iron oxide. The catalyst may be prepared by a procedure wherein the silica gel support is immersed in aqueous phosphoric acid, drained and dried, for example at a temperature of 150‹C; the silica gel support preferably is impregnated with phosphoric acid in situ in an olefin hydration reactor. The silica gel support may be prepared by a procedure wherein porous low-density silica gel having a surface area of from 200 to 500 m<SP>2</SP>/g and a pore volume of from 1 to 2.2 cm<SP>2</SP>/g is heated at a temperature of from 200 to 350‹C and a pressure of from 30 to 1500 psig in gas comprising steam or a mixture of steam and nitrogen; the Specification discloses a preferred silica gel having specified surface area, pore volume, average pore diameter, bulk density and chemical composition.
