A package holding one or more rows of articles such as bottles or tins is formed by folding a cardboard &c. blank on a jig to produce the package top wall and sides, placing the articles each with one end engaging the top wall, and folding depending portions of the blank into engagement with the other end of each article. The jigs 30 may be carried in series on intermittently moving conveyer chains 37 and each forms in section two V-shaped channels against which a blank is folded manually. In one embodiment for producing the package shown in Fig. 6, the top forming portion 17 is folded over parts 34, Fig. 5, with its medial slit 15, Fig. 7, coinciding with a slit 32 in the jig, and the side forming portions 18 lying against parts 33. Base, partition, and handle forming portions 20, 22, 13 depend substantially vertically from the jig and are positioned by bars 50 until the articles 25 are placed on the blank. The articles 25 are advanced intermittently on belts 38 to rest opposite tilting bars 41 which cause two rows of three to fall into the jig channels with their necks engaging apertures 26 and 35 in the blank and jig respectively. Guide bars 47, curved to provide a depression adjacent each article, ensure the positioning of the articles as they fall. When the jig passes the bars 50, the blank parts 20, 22 are folded about the articles by hand or by automatic means (not described), the parts 13 being tucked into the slot 15. The package is then removed from the jig and reversed. In another embodiment for forming the package shown in Fig. 11, the jig has a central hinge 73 whereby, after the articles are positioned on the blank, its parts may pivot upwards to the position shown in Fig. 10. Base forming parts 67, 68 are then folded in, an extension 66 of the part 68 forming a partition. The part 67 is secured to the part 68 by adhesive, the joint being pressed by a roller 78. In both packages, cuts in the side walls adjacent the base form contents engaging apertures 24, 63. In lieu of a series of moving jigs, a stationary jig along which the blanks are moved, may be provided. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 761,226.
