Abstract
785,935. Agglutinated fibrous sheet materials; laminates. VERSIL, Ltd. Sept. 28, 1955 [Oct. 7, 1954], No. 28921/54. Class 140. [Also in Groups IX and XXIII] Apparatus, for producing webs or mats of short lengths of grouped and bonded monofilaments of extrudable material such as glass or thermoplastic to which a bonding medium may be applied, comprises means for forming a number of continuous filaments and means for grouping and bonding them together, a first continuously operating ejector air-traction device receiving and attenuating the grouped filaments, a second such device operating intermittently to feed the filaments to an oscillating cutter in synchronism with the operation thereof, and a third continuously operating such device tensioning the filaments during cutting and discharging the cut lengths in random arrangement on to a continuously moving conveyer surface which may be a paper or like base subsequently forming part of the web. Two or more units may be arranged in parallel to distribute cut lengths of filaments on a common conveyer surface in parallel or overlapping bands or in successively applied layers. In the apparatus shown, glass filaments 1 extruded from a die-plate 2 are sprayed with an adhesive from a nozzle 8 and guided by a hopper 4 and extension 7 to a drum 5 and are " grouped " by a V groove (or grooves) 6 therein; the assembled filaments 9 are withdrawn and attenuated by an air-traction device 10 from which they are fed by an air-traction device 15 operating in synchronism with the movements of a cutter device 21; staple lengths 24 are received and discharged, on a conveyer 26 moving over a suction-box 27, by a third air-traction device 23 which may be oscillated about a vertical axis. The adhesive may be a monomer of a lowpressure synthetic resin.
