Abstract

785,917. Making loops; bending; forging. CARTWRIGHT BROS.(ENGINEERS), Ltd., and CARTWRIGHT, A. B. May 16, 1955 [May 26, 1954], No. 15485/54. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A method of making hooks, particularly for hoisting purposes, comprises bending a bar to hook shape in two stages in dies and subsequently forming the bent bar to the correct hook shape in finishing dies. A heated bar has its end pointed in die recesses 10, Fig. 1, in a pair of upper and lower dies A, B. The pointed end is then placed on a portion 112 in the die A and initially bent, Fig. 5. A roller rotatably mounted on a horizontal axis may be used instead of the flat portion 112. The bent end is then inverted, placed on a step 111 on die A against a stop 12, Fig. 7, and bent against a curved portion 11 to partial hook formation. The hook end of the bar is then transferred into a further die recess 13, Fig. 9, and is further bent to full hook form. The hook is then transferred into a die recess 14, Fig. 1, in the die A and drop forged to the correct hook form, Fig. 10 (not shown). The drop forging operation also serves to sever the hook from the remainder of the bar. The bending of the bar may be performed in a press or in a drop forging hammer. The final drop forging operation may be performed in separate dies from the preceding operations and may be performed in a separate drop forging hammer. Hooks with stub tips may be produced instead of with pointed tips.
