Abstract

The invention comprises compounds having the formul : <FORM:0785681/IV (a)/1> in which (Formula I) the 3-position is occupied by either a divalent group convertible to keto by acid hydrolysis, e.g. a cyclic acetal, or by a pair of univalent groups together convertible to a single keto group by acid hydrolysis, e.g. a non-cyclic acetal or in which (Formula II) the 3-position is occupied by a univalent group which is convertible to keto by acid hydrolysis, e.g. an enol ether and their preparation from the corresponding 17-acetyl compound by treatment with an oxalic acid diester, e.g. dimethyl oxalate in the presence of a strong alkali, e.g. sodamide, sodium hydride and sodium triphenylmethyl, or of an alkali-metal alkoxide, e.g. sodium methoxide. Examples disclose the production of d and dl-D 5-3-ethylenedioxy-11-keto-etrenoylpyruvic acid. Specifications 763,208, 777,691, 777,693, 785,683 and 785,684 are referred to.
