Classes 103(6) and 108(3) A spring group and damping mechanism for location between a bolster and a railway car truck includes a top member A with vertical surfaces 91, 92 engaged by vertical surfaces on friction shoes S and a bottom member B having a central- V- . shaped structure with inclined surfaces 43, 44, 47, 62 engaged .by inclined surfaces on the friction shoes, which are urged by springs 23 into frictional engagement with the surfaces on the members A and B in order to damp oscillations of load-supporting springs 21, 22 interposed between the members. The member B has lugs 26 adapted to enter spaced holes in the spring seat of the truck or similarly-spaced holes in a spring plank. Flanges 28, 32 and ribs 31, 34 on ends of the member B maintain the load-supporting springs 21, 22 in place. The V-shaped structure is provided with two angularly-related plates 36, 37 joined by a web 38, the plates at their ends being connected by webs to parallel auxiliary plates. The outer surfaces of the plates 36, 37 are engaged by surfaces 98 of the friction shoes S and the other surfaces of the auxiliary plates are engaged by surfaces of auxiliary plates 103, 106 at the sides of the shoes. To prevent lateral movement of the shoes the surfaces of the plates 103, 106 and the auxiliary plates of the V-shaped structure are tapered.
