In an injection-moulding machine of the type comprising an injection piston 2, a hopper 7, a material-feeding plunger 9 and a shoot 10 through which the material is fed by the plunger to the injection cylinder 1, the bottom of the shoot is partly closed by a shield 12 which prevents material being pushed up from the cylinder into the shoot by the piston. Material falls from the shoot into the cylinder by way of the clearance between the shield and the shoot. As shown, the shield is carried by a bar 15 pivotally attached at 19 to a lever 16. When the piston 2 moves forward to inject material through an aperture 4 into a mould 5, the shield also moves forward to close the gap 20. The height of the shield may be adjusted by means of a ratchet device 17, 18. The shield may be vibrated by means of a vibrator attached to bar 15, to facilitate feeding of the material through the clearance. In modifications the shield may be displaceable laterally through a slit to act as a slide valve, which may be coupled mechanically to the members that move the injection piston.
