Abstract

784,964. Ironing presses. FORSE CORPORATION, [formerly FORSE EQUIPMENT CORPORATION.]. Oct. 13, 1955 [Oct. 25, 1954], No. 29144/55. Class 138 (2). The movement of a press head 42 into engagement with an article to be pressed or away therefrom is controlled by a two-surface tiltable cam 14 adapted to tilt during the first phase of the closing movement of the press head, and means are provided adapted during the last phase of the closing movement of the press head to hold the cam 14 stationary so that the load acting upon the press head during the last closing phase thereof is conveyed through the then stationary cam to a stationary part of the press frame 1. The head 42 is carried by a lever 24 which is pivoted at 43 to a rocker arm 9 pivotally supported at 7 on an inclined upright member 4 of the frame. The pressure lever 24 carries a roller 21 which engages in a cam slot 15 having two cam surfaces 16, 17. The roller end of the lever 24 is pivotally connected to a yoke 25 which is connected to a piston rod 29 of a piston working in a cylinder 30 supported by a bracket 31. Pressure fluid can be admitted to the cylinder 30 through a three-way valve 33 to move the piston upwardly against the bias of springs 27 extending between the yoke 25 and a bracket 28. The cam 14 is rigidly connected to one link 18 of a toggle linkage, the other link 20 of which is pivotally connected at 19 to the link 18, and at 10a to an adjusting lever 10. The lever 10 is pivotally mounted at 7 and can have its position adjusted by means of a hand wheel 13 and adjusting rod 12 which engages a threaded bore in a pin 11 carried by the lever 10. Turning the hand wheel 13 varies the position of the normally stationary pivot 10a thereby controlling the final pressure exerted by the head 42. The toggle link 18 which is rigid with the cam 14 is pivotally connected to the rocker arm 9 by means of a bolt 35 which is pivotally connected to arms 36 biased downwardly by springs 37 connected to the bracket 28. The head 42 is universally and spring mounted on the lever 24 and has an arrangement of links 47, 56 pivoted at 46, Z and 7 to maintain the head 42 parallel with itself during the final closing phase of the press. The bar 47 comprises two portions 47a, 47b breakably connected by a spring and bolt arrangement (Fig. 5, not shown) in order to accommodate a garment which is thicker at the front of the'buck 3 than at the rear thereof, or vice versa. Operation.-With the press in the open position (Fig. 1, not shown) a garment is placed on the buck 3 and fluid under pressure admitted to the cylinder 30 through the valve 33. As the piston rod 29 rises the roller 21 is moved from the lower to the upper end of the cam surface 16 which is concentric with the bolt 35. During this movement lever 24 becomes coupled to rocker arm 9 and the head 42 is moved to the almost closed position shown in Fig. 2. As soon as the roller 21 starts its movement on the cam surface 17 whose centre of curvature coincides with the pivot 43, the toggle links 18, 20 will be in alignment. Consequentially the cam 14 and rocker arm 9 are arrested and the lever 24 tilts about the pivot 43. Pressure is consequently now conveyed to the press head 42 at an increased ratio but at a reduced stroke. To terminate the pressing operation valve 33 is opened to allow fluid in the cylinder 30 to escape under the influence of springs 27 and 37. A shock absorber 38 connected to the cam 14 by a pivoted arm 40 and rod 41 is operative during the fast opening and closing phases.
