Abstract
784,957. Electrolytic capacitors. MALLORY & CO., Inc., P. R. Aug. 8,1956 [Sept. 14, 1954], No. 22755/55. Class 37. A dry electrolytic capacitor comprises an anode of a film-forming metal such as tantalum and a cathode of a non-film forming substance such as graphite, silver or silicon, the electrodes being separated by a solid sulphate which is maintained in close contact with both electrodes. Preferably tin sulphate is employed, though it is stated that bismuth and antimony sulphates may also be used. In the embodiment shown a tantalum disc 5 which may be anodized prior to assembly in sulphuric acid is separated from graphite discs 1, 2 by means of pressed tinsulphate discs 3, 4. To increase the capacitance the tantalum disc may be etched electrolytically in an acid fluoride salt. The assembly is held together by a rivet 6 which is insulated from the tantalum by a plastic sleeve 8. The rivet 6 supports a negative terminal 7 electrically connected to the graphite discs. A positive terminal 9 is provided by a solderable metal element pressed to a tab extending from the tantalum disc 5. The assembly may be sealed by dipping in a silicone varnish or by encasing in an epoxy-resin casting. In a modification the negative electrode may be in the form of a silicon cup which also serves as the cell container. A reversible capacitor may be constructed having two film-forming electrodes.
