Abstract
760,761. Electrolytic capacitors. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Sept. 17, 1954 [Sept. 23, 1953], No. 27009/54. Class 37. An electrolytic capacitor comprises an anode 4 of sintered metal, e.g. aluminium or tantalum, a metal casing 1 serving as the cathode, and a cover plate consisting of a solderable metal, e.g. copper or brass, 3 coated with an impervious layer 2 of the same metal as used for the anode, and insulated from the casing 1 by a sealing member 10, e.g. of rubber. The anode 4 is formed upon a strip 5 of the same metal, the strip 5 being welded to the layer 2 at the points 6, so that the cover plate serves as an external terminal for the anode, a lead 7a being soldered to the metal 3. A similar lead 7 is soldered to the casing 1 which is of aluminium if an aluminium anode is used and is of silver if a tantalum anode is used. Spacing members 12 consisting of porous insulating material such as glass-wool or glass fabric are arranged around the anode 4 to prevent it from touching the walls of the casing 1. The cover plate is held in place between the turned-over edge of the casing and a beading formed therein. When a tantalum anode is used the electrolyte may be sulphuric acid. The Specification also states that previously proposed forms of electrolytic capacitors employing sintered anodes have been provided with a lead soldered to the anode, the soldered joint being protected by an insulating coating or by embedding it in a suitable sealing compound.
