Abstract
784,625. Making springs; altering physical properties. INSTITUT DR. ING RHEINHARD STRAUMANN AKT.-GES., and STRAUMANN, F. Oct. 3, 1955 [Oct. 2, 1954], No. 28088/55. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A method of producing a non-magnetic thermally compensated spring from a non-ferromagnetic material which crystallizes in the cubic system and shows an anomaly of the thermo-elastic coefficient as well as a thermoelastic anistropy comprises homogenizing and quenching the material and then treating it so as to produce the required orientation of crystal structure in the finished products. In an embodiment a wire or ribbon of a non-magnetic metallic material, e.g. #-brass, is homogenized at a temperature not exceeding 1200‹ C. and then quenched, cold drawn and/or flat rolled to a total reduction in cross-section not exceeding 95 per cent. Finally the texture is improved by recrystallization at approximately 500‹ C. The above treatment brings the 110 or 100 direction parallel with the longitudinal axis of the wire or ribbon besides imparting to the spring material a low thermo-elastic coefficient due to the formation of a super-lattice. Specification 733,510, [Group II], is referred to.
