Abstract
784,587. Reducing iron ores. ARATA, V. March 18, 1955, No. 7971/55. Class 72 A method for the production of iron and iron carbon alloys from ores consists of the operation of a plant comprising one or more units consisting of two or more electric furnaces connected in parallel with respect to the flow of solid charge materials and evolved gases and one or more preheating furnace connected in series with the electric furnaces and in parallel with one another when two or more are used, the cycle of each individual electric furnace including a reduction period-during which the evolved gases preheat the solid charge in the preheating furnace, a refining period in which the electric furnace is disconnected from the remainder of the unit, and a repair period. As shown, two rotary kiln furnaces 2, 2<SP>1</SP> fed by screw conveyers 1, 1<SP>1</SP> with ore, reducing agents and slag-forming materials are connected in parallel with each other and in series with two electric furnaces 10, 10<SP>1</SP> by-pipes 7, 7<SP>1</SP> having valves 5, 6 so that the product of the rotary furnaces may be supplied to either electric furnace. The gases evolved in the electric furnaces are led to a main through pipes 11, 11<SP>1</SP> from which they may be supplied to the rotary furnaces, air being, supplied to support combustion therein. In order to ensure even distribution of the charge in the electric furnaces the pipes 7, 7<SP>1</SP> may divide into two. If more than one unit is employed the gas main may be common to all units and the gas may be maintained at a pressure slightly above atmospheric pressure. The electric furnaces are isolated from the rest of the unit during the refining process so that though the process as a whole is continuous, the refining process is batchwise. At the end of the refining process the electric furnace may be repaired before recharging. U.S.A. Specification 2,747,985 is referred to
