Abstract

784,579. Rejecting defective cigarettes. INDUSTRIAL MACHINERY CO., Ltd. Nov. 29, 1955 [Dec. 23, 1954], No. 37239/54. Class 130. [Also in Group XXX] Energization of an electromagnet 14, by a device responsive to undesired variation in tobacco content or density of one of a plurality of aligned axially-moving cigarettes 28 on a conveyer 27, causes its resiliently or pivotallymounted armature 16 to move against spring- loading 18 and strike an appropriate one of steel pins 4 and slide it in a rotary pin carrier 1 to abut a vulcanized fibre stop-plate 21, rebound being prevented by permanent or other magnets 22; the pin is returned by a circular ramp 24 having an intermediate non-inclined portion which positions the pin to contact a lever 29 which it first depresses against a strong spring 38 and then releases so that in returning to abut a stop 29a the lever 29 forces a lever 33, normally held against it by a weak spring 39, to fly clear and act through an end-plate 35 to deflect the defective cigarette into a receptacle or on to a parallel conveyer leading thereto. The electromagnet 14 and plate 21 are mounted on a shaft 8 turnable by its squared end 43, when a grub screw or screws 42 in its support 9 are slackened, to allow timing adjustment. The cigarettes 28 come from a continuous-rod machine and may be held to the conveyer 27 adjacent the plate 35 by a driven roller (not shown). The device energizing the electromagnet 14 may be as disclosed in Specification 744,311, [Group XXXVI]. The pin 4 need not be partially returned before operating the lever 29.
