A machine for punching stacks of paper or other material comprises a plurality of punches 116 which are confined to parallel linear paths of motion by means of guides 70, 74, 76, the punches being engaged by a striker 118 which together with the punches is supported by a spring-influenced carriage 108 which is operable by cams 92, 94, of different pitch carried by a manually-operable U-shaped lever 96, the arrangement being such that the striker 118 is movable in a path having a linear component in the direction of motion of the punches and a simultaneous rotational component in the plane of motion of the punches so as to drive the punches successively at different speeds. The punches have projections 114 supported by the lower flange of the carriage 108. The punches co-operate with rectangular openings 62 in a die plate 58 and are arranged so that alternate punches are of one equal length and the remaining punches are of a different equal length. The striker 118, which is provided with a knob 138, is held in position at one end by means of an L-shaped bracket 120 and at the other end by means of a latch pin 132 engaged by the upper end of a spring-influenced lever 130 pivoted to the carriage 108. The punches may readily be removed after unlatching the striker and releasing it from the bracket 120. The workpiece is positioned by means of a stop 52 adjustable in a slot 50 in a supporting table 38. The carriage 108 is provided with an adjustable stop 164 (not shown) which abuts the guide 76 to fix the lower end of the path of the carriage. Punchings fall into a drawer supported on slides 66. The punches may be rigidly secured to the carriage.
