Abstract
Cellulose esters of organic acids having a degree of substitution of 2.25-2.6 are subjected in solid particulate form to the hydrolysing action of an aqueous solution of an acid having a degree of ionization of at least 0.1 measured in normal solution at 18 DEG C. until their degree of substitution has been reduced to 0.8-1.9. The acid may be sulphuric, hydrochloric or nitric, preferably nitric. The concentration of the acid preferably does not exceed about 12 per cent and may with advantage be about 1-10 per cent. The acid temperature may be 15-75 DEG C. In an example, a cellulose acetate of acetyl value 53.9 per cent (as acetic acid), dried and ground to pass a 30-mesh B.S.S. screen, is immersed in about 8 times its weight of a 7.5 per cent (by weight) solution of nitric acid at 25 DEG C. for 16 hours, the nitric acid run off and the cellulose acetate washed. It has an acetyl value of 46.3 per cent. If the ripening period is increased by 8 hours the acetyl value is reduced to 40.8 per cent. By using higher temperatures and longer ripening periods acetyl values as low as 27 may be obtained. The products are soluble in acetone-water mixtures, can be moulded, and are more stable than the original cellulose acetates.
