An absorbent pad comprises fibrous sheet material with a peripheral folded edge, two opposed marginal edges being rounded and the side edges of their folded portions being inclined inwardly from the adjacent marginal edges. A pad 12 is formed by placing a cotton filler 17 on a rectangular sheet of gauze, folding opposite marginal flaps 19 of the gauze over the filler 17 so that they meet, overlap or are spaced from one another, the remaining marginal side flaps 20 being then folded over the first marginal flaps 19 to form a curved edge fold 20a. The side edges 20b of the remaining marginal flaps 20 are arranged to be inwardly inclined from the edge folds of the pad. The pad 12 is disposed on an adhesive carrier strip 10 and protected by conventional facing members 14, 16 which are removed before use. In an alternative construction (not shown) a filler is arranged between a layer of absorbent cellulose wadding and fibrous sheet material the margins of which are folded over the filler and the wadding in a similar manner to the pad 12. The pad so formed is then folded in two or four with the folded over margins enclosed. The filler is made of cotton or rayon fibres, cellulose pulp or cellulose or paper wadding. The carrier strip 10 is made of plastic film, e.g. the substance sold under the Registered Trade Mark " Cellophane," rubber, cellulose acetates, cellulose acetate butyrate, cellulose acetate propionate or other cellulose esters or ethers, polyvinyl esters, salts or acetates, polyethylene, super polyamides or is made of cloth which may be cross-woven or knitted.
