Abstract

781,838. Colour television tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Jan. 16, 1956 [Jan. 19, 1955], No. 1416/56. Class 39(1). A colour television tube of the kind comprising a screen having parallel strips which luminesce in different colours on excitation, is provided on the observer's side of the screen internally with a second screen which diffuses the light emanating from the luminescent screen substantially only in directions transverse to the longitudinal direction of the strips. As shown diagramatically in the Figure, the second screen 20 may take the form of a plurality of ribs 5, 6, 7 acting as cylindrical elements extending parallel to the strips 2, 3, 4 of the first screen 1, the transverse dimension of the ribs being not greater than that of the strips. The second screen should be spaced by at least twice the focal length of the cylindrical lens, preferably at four times this length, from the first screen. As shown, the lens 5 gives rise to images 11, 8 of strips 3, 2, the lens 6 to images 14, 9, 12 of strips 2, 3, 4 and the lens 7 to images 10, 15 of strips 4, 3, images 16, 17 being also formed of strips (not shown). Strips 2, 3,4 may luminesce for example in red, blue and green respectively. The result is a three times finer line structure.
