Abstract

[Also in Divisions H1 and H4] A colour television display device, Fig. 1, comprises a plurality of separate phosphor screen areas adapted to emit light in different colours, means for scanning the areas to stimulate the emission of light in accordance with a colour television signal and a plurality of light-transmitting fibre bundles 30, 32, 34 commencing at or adjacent the phosphor areas respectively and terminating at a common viewing surface 36 at which the fibres from the different bundles are intermeshed so as to synthesise the light from the phosphor areas into a coloured image. Each bundle of fibres is made up of a pile of woven sheets which, as shown on an exaggereated scale at 38, comprise light-transmitting warp fibres 40 held together by weft fibres 42. The sheets are layered in cyclic sequence at screen 36 as illustrated in Fig. 2 which shows only the sheets 44 of bundle 34 with the interleaved ends 46 of the sheets of the other bundles. The resulting image is thereby formed with the component colours line interlaced. The sheets are cemented to surface 36, which may be provided with a lenticular, Fresnel or other light diffuser. At the other ends they are either cemented to glass plates 24, 26, 28, which are located adjacent the phosphor areas, or continue to the phosphors. The phosphors may be located in separate cathode-ray tubes as illustrated in Fig. 1, or may be in a common tube provided with one or a plurality of electron guns. In the case of a onegun tube the electron beam is switched between the phosphors in a sequence at line or frame rate. Where the fibres terminate adjacent the phosphors, as illustrated, the cathode-ray tube face plates are also formed from optical fibres. The phosphors may be selected so as to produce the desired component colour lights directly or may be selected to produce white light and operate in conjunction with colour selective filters 18, 20, 22. Such an arrangement may be readily converted to black-and-white image reproduction by removal of the filters. The fibres in the bundles may be spread out so as to magnify the reproduced image or may be arranged to reduce the image prior to subsequent optical projection with magnification by a lens.
