Abstract

781,756. Change-speed gear. HINDMARCH, T. Sept. 1, 1954 [Sept. 2, 1953], No. 24293/53. Addition to 599,887. Class 80 (2). A divided-torque non-reversing gear comprises two or more parallel countershafts designed to carry equal torque, and carrying pinions meshing one or more pinions on one or more input and one or more output shafts, the torque-path through each countershaft including a friction clutch of the kind having engageable and disengageable V-grooved metal friction surfaces which can slip to permit equalization of the torque through each countershaft. The arrangement differs from that in the parent Specification by the omission of the reverse idlers in one of the divided-torque trains or the inclusion of idlers in both trains, so that both trains drive in the same direction but at different ratio. A third alternative train may also be provided. One or more of the parallel trains may be isolated under low-torque conditions, and isolating clutches may be provided for cutting out different ones of multiple input and output shafts. Each shaft may have two or more clutches in parallel. Specifications 594,904 and 607,940 are referred to in the Provisional Specification.
