Abstract

Cobalt phthalocyanines are converted into vat dyes of improved solubility in the vat by reacting with formaldehyde or a formaldehydeyielding compound (e.g. paraformaldehyde or trioxane) in presence of sulphuric, phosphoric, or methyl sulphuric acid having a concentration of at least 90 per cent by weight, if desired in presence of 5-40 per cent of an amide by weight of the formaldehyde. 0.1 to 5 equivalents of formaldehyde are employed per cobalt phthalocyanine radical. Amides specified are propionamide, butyramide, benzamide, urea, biuret, formamide, acetamide. In examples, cobalt phthalocyanine is reacted with paraformaldehyde in sulphuric acid, alone or in presence of acetamide, formamide, or urea, and with paraformaldehyde in methylsulphuric acid.
