Abstract
Uranyl nitrate is separated from aqueous solutions thereof by extraction with an organic compound containing a cyclic ether group and especially such a compound having a 5- or 6-membered ring. Preferred compounds have a furane of pyran nucleus, for example tetrahydrofurane, tetrahydropyran and dihydropyran. The organic compounds preferably contain only carbon and hydrogen besides the cyclic ether group. According to examples: (1) aqueous uranyl nitrate solution containing ammonium nitrate and nitric acid was extracted with an equal volume of tetrahydrosylvane, the partition coefficient being 38. The uranium compound is recoverable by evaporation of the organic compound which may be condensed and used for further extractions; (5) Monazite sand was heated with concentrated sulphuric acid at 200 DEG C., the mixture cooled, centrifuged and the supernatant liquid separated. The residual sulphates were washed with concentrated sulphuric acid and the liquid removed. The solids were dissolved in water and caustic soda added to a pH of 8 whereupon the precipitated solids were filtered, washed and dissolved in nitric acid to yield a solution having a pH of 1.5. This nitric acid solution was extracted with 2-methyltetrahydrofurane and the organic solvent extract was washed with water to bring the uranium into an aqueous solution which aqueous solution was evaporated to dryness and calcined to U3O8. Further examples compare the extractions with tetrahydropyran, dihydropyran and the conventional extraction solvent, diethyl ether. Further cyclic ethers which are referred to are 2 - methyl - tetrahydrofurane (tetrahydrosylvane), 1 - methyl - 3 - (21 - tetrahydrofuryl) propyl ether, tetrahydropyran, dihydropyran, di - (21 - tetrahydrofuryl) - 1 : 5 - pentane, 2 - n - butyltetrahydrofurane, 2 - n - butyl furane.
