Abstract

781,672. Waveguide accessories. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. (International Telephone & Telegraph Corporation). Nov. 8, 1955, No. 31895/55. Class 40 (8). [Also in Group XL (c)] A microwave phase-shifting device comprises a rotatable spiral antenna 8 for launching a circularlypolarized wave in a waveguide 2 the wave being picked up either by a fixed spiral antenna similar to the antenna 8 or by orthogonal probes 13, 14. The phase-shift is proportional to the angular velocity of the antenna 8. The antenna may be in the form of spiral wire or ribbon centrally - supported or fixed, e.g. by a printing technique, to a dielectric disc 10. The disc is supported by a shaft 4 within the inner conductor 3a of an input co-axial line. A sleeve 4a around the shaft 4 provides a R.F. choke adjacent the end of the input line. The energy is launched in the H 11 mode, the waveguide 2 being dimensioned below cut-off for all higher modes. To provide impedance matching the radiating and receiving antennae are spaced one-quarterwavelength from the ends of the waveguide.
