Abstract

A composition for fortifying animal and human food comprises a multiplicity of small solid particles most of which pass through a 16-mesh screen and are retained on a 100-mesh screen, the particles comprising (a) ethyl cellulose, (b) material containing any one or more of the fat-soluble vitamins A, D and E, e.g. vitamin A esters such as the acetate or palmitate, calciferol, fish oils and their concentrates, carotene, irradiated ergosterol or 7-dehydrocholesterol, or tocopherols, (c) an edible anti-oxidant in the proportion of at least 0,05 per cent by weight of the total, e.g. propyl gallate, butylated hydroxyanisole, nordihydroguairetic acid, 2, 5-ditertiary butyl hydroquinone, or diphenyl p-phenylenediamine. Preferably the particles contain a vegetable flour (d), e.g. soyabean, corn germ, cottonseed, linseed, wheat germ, corn, peanut, or wheat flour or boulted rice polish. If flour is present, (d) and (a) form respectively between 5 per cent and 60 per cent and between 15 per cent and 75 per cent by weight of the total. In the absence of flour, (a) forms between 25 per cent and 75 per cent by weight of the total. Lecithin and citric acid may be incorporated to serve as synergists for the antioxidant, and surface active agents, e.g. fatty acid esters of polyethylene glycols, sorbitans and mannitans (the acid(s) containing from 8 to 22 carbon atoms) may also be added in the proportion of 0,5 per cent to 40 per cent by weight of the totals. The particles containing (a), (b), (c) and additives in solid solution with (d) suspended therein are made preferably by dissolving (a), (b) and (c) and additives in an organic solvent, e.g. ethyl acetate, or ethylene dichloride, mixing in (d), spreading the mixture as a thin layer, removing the solvent, and grinding the solid layer to particles of the required size. Alternatively, the substituents may be mixed and melted in an inert atmosphere at elevated temperature and converted into solid droplets or globules by the methods of Specifications 681,930 and 681,931. Specification 573,937 also is referred to.ALSO:A composition for fortifying animal and human food comprises a multiplicity of small solid particles most of which pass through a 16-mesh screen and are retained on a 100-mesh screen, the particles comprising (a) ethyl cellulose, (b) material containing any one or more of the fat-soluble Vitamins A, D and E, e.g. Vitamin A esters such as the acetate or palmitate, calciferol, fish oils and their concentrates, carotene, irradiated ergosterol or 7-dehydrocholesterol, or tocopherols, (c) an edible antioxidant in the proportion of at least 0.05 per cent by weight of the total, e.g. propyl gallate, butylated hydroxyanisole, nordihydroguairetic acid, 2,5-ditertiary butyl hydroquinone, or diphenyl p-phenylenediamine.
