Abstract

781,302. Fishing reels. STOKELEY, B., GIBBIN, J., GRIFFITHS, A., and SMITH, A. G. April 22, 1955 [Sept. 10, 1954], No. 26343/54. Class 48. In a fishing reel of the stationary drum-type comprising a line drum S carried by a reciprocating spindle 1 and a flyer K mounted to rotate about an axis concentric with the spindle, the line drum is capable of rotation relative to the spindle against the torsional resistance of a coil spring 34. The line drum comprises a spool portion 35 rotatably mounted by means of a ball race 44 on a sleeve 42 rotatably mounted on the reciprocating spindle 1. The coil spring 34 is disposed in a recess in the inner flange 38 of the spool and is anchored at its outer end to the rim 39 of the inner flange 38 and at its inner end to a collar 41 fixed to the sleeve 42. The sleeve 42 has an end flange 47 which bears against the side face of a sprocket 50 fixed to the reciprocating spindle and the pressure between these bearing surfaces is adjusted by a wing nut 51 screwed on to the free end of the reciprocating spindle and having a counter-bore 52 containing a washer 53 engaging the outer end of the sleeve 42 and urged thereagainst by a spring 57 acting between the washer and the wing nut. A clicker element 45 in the form of a spring-centralized rockable tooth is mounted on a plate 43 secured to the sleeve 42 and engages the sprocket 50. The friction clutch formed by the bearing surfaces of flange 47 and sprocket 50 may be dispensed with, the clicker element 45 and sprocket 50 then forming the only connection between the sleeve 42 and the reciprocating spindle. The flyer K comprises a cylinder secured by a nut 3 to a sleeve 2 journalled in bearings in the casing B of the reel and secured to a collar 6 having a worm 7 engaged with a gear-wheel 18 driven by a crank 11. The flyer cylinder has a flange 71 embracing the end wall of the casing B. A U-shaped pick-up 60 is secured at both ends to lugs 62 hinged about diametrically opposite studs 63 screwed into bosses on the side wall of the flyer cylinder K and the pick-up is biased to an operative position by coil springs 75 located in the bosses and acting on the lugs 62. When the pick-up has been depressed against the action of the springs 75 into its non-operating position shown dotted in Fig. 3 it is held therein by an arm 76 of a spring-urged trip member extending through a slot 71<SP>1</SP> in the flyer cylinder K and engaging a flat 68 on one of the lugs 62. A second arm 78, Fig. 1, on the trip member extends at right angles to the first arm 76 through a slot in the end wall of the flyer cylinder into the path of a striker lug on the end wall of the casing B. When therefore the flyer cylinder is rotated in a line-winding direction the trip member is struck by the strike lug and releases the pick-up. A handle 12 is slidable against the action of a spring 14 on the end of the crank 11 driving the gearwheel 18 and has a groove with the ends of which a pin on the crank 11 engages to locate the handle in an in-use or an out-of-use position. A ratchet device for preventing rotation of the flyer cylinder K in a line-unwinding direction comprises a spring pressed pawl 21 and a ratchet wheel 20 secured to the shaft 10 of the gear-wheel 18. The pawl 21 can be held clear of the ratchet wheel by a finger 26, Fig. 6, extending through an arcuate slot in the side wall of the casing B and formed on a sleeve 23 rotatably mounted on a tubular projection 24 of the casing through whih the shaft 10 extends. Reciprocating movement is imparted to the reciprocating spindle 1 by a pin 33 on the gearwheel 18 engaging a slot 32 in the end of an arm 27 fixed to the reciprocating spindle.
