Abstract
781,263. Stacking bricks. BENNETT, C. L. , March 19, 1954 [Dec. 22, 1952], No. 32469/52. Class 94(1). [Also in Group XXX] A number of lifting dogs 7, 8, 9, Fig. 1, receive bricks from a wire cutting machine and stack them in the configuration shown in Fig. 2. The. bricks are delivered in groups of nine to three plates 2, 3, 4 which are then moved apart by pneumatic rams or by screws to space the bricks for engagement by the lifting dogs which deliver them to a belt conveyer 43. The dogs are mounted in a row on a beam 58 raised and lowered on guides 59 by pneumatic rams 56, 57 and are opened, as they are lowered, by engagement with pins 64 extending across a slotted member 65 through which the dogs depend. The first two batches of bricks engaged by the dogs are engaged at the points b, a, Fig. 2, so that the weight of the bricks turns discs 62 on the dogs to present the bricks in the attitude shown at 1, 2. The third batch is engaged at the point marked c. Springs on the discs 62 press them against restraining friction surfaces on the arms of the dogs. The dogs and their operating guides and rams are carried by a carriage 61, Fig. 1, mounted for movement in the direction of the belt 43 by pneumatic rams 67, Fig. 5, through a stroke which is varied, to provide the configuration shown in Fig. 2, by stops 84, 85, 86 and 87, 88, 89 engaging members 90, 190 on the carriage 61 and carried by shafts 79, 179 which are turned through a third of a revolution after each batch of bricks has been delivered to the belt 43. After three batches have been delivered in the configuration shown in Fig. 2, a switch 91 is closed by a cam 92 on the shaft 179 to cause the belt 43 to move sufficiently to provide space for a further three batches. The drive to the shafts 79, 179 is through geneva mechanisms 82, 182, 80, 180 so that they each rotate through a third of a revolution for each revolution of a shaft 74 driven from a motor 75 and carrying cams 71, 72, 73 by which valves controlling the rams by which the dogs are raised and lowered and the carriage 61 moved are operated. In an alternative construction the movements of the plates 2, 3, 4, of the carriage 61 and of the lifting dogs are provided by screw and nut devices, and pivots 11, 12, 13 of the lifting dogs slide in vertical slot in a beam which is raised by the dogs after they have closed. In such a construction the bricks may merely be laid side by side instead of the configuration of Fig. 2.
