Abstract

780,940. Annealing. ALLIS-CHALMERS MANUFACTURING CO. March 21, 1956 [March 23, 1955]. No. 8787/56. Class 72 [Also in Groups XXII and XXXI] A method of producing side bars for the track links of crawler tractors and the like comprises preforming the side bar as a steel body with a pair of transverse bores, through hardening said body in its entirety and tempering portions of said body surrounding said bores to render them more ductile than the remainder of the through hardened body. After forging, the side bar is normalized to a grain structure which is a ferrite with a pearlite matrix and then machined to final dimensions except for the pin and bushing bores 38 and 39. After machining, the bar is heated in a furnace to a temperature between 1300‹ to 2000‹ F. and then quenched in a water solution with 5 per cent caustic soda at a temperature of 120‹F. The side bar is then tempered between 600‹ and 850‹F. and allowed to cool in air. In order that the pin and bushing bores can be economically machined the portions of the side bar adjacent the bores are heated to a temperature above the previous tempering temperature by high frequency inductions coils 81, 82 (Fig. 10). to reduce the hardness in said portions. Some of the ductile bore portion remains after final machining and this facilitates press fitting over the bushing.
