Abstract

Protective compositions for the skin contain one or more diene polymers (butadiene, methyl butadiene and dimethyl butadiene are specified) of molecular weight not greater than 15,000. Other ingredients include ointment bases, emulsifiers, fillers, esters of polyvinyl alcohol, and bactericides such as phenol, organic mercury compounds, and derivatives of phenol, diphenyl methane and diphenyl sulphide, perfumes and mould inhibitors. The compositions are prepared by melting together the polymer, ointment bases and other water insoluble substances, adding the filler and then water containing the water-soluble and/or emulsified substances. An example describes a composition comprising a butadiene polymer (M.W.32,000), white petroleum jelly, paraffin wax, emulsifier, talcum, sodium salt of p-chloro-m-cresol, lactic acid and water.
