Abstract

780,045. Making tubes. MORRIS MOTORS, Ltd. Jan. 4, 1956 [Jan. 21, 1955], No. 1853/55. Class 83 (2). In making flattened oval or quasi-rectangular section heat exchanger tubes from aluminium or light alloy strip or strips coated with brazing metal, the strip or strips is or are formed to tubular shape with the coating or coatings on the outside, the longitudinal edge zones are incurved to be in contact and the joint or joints so formed are brazed. Tube A, Fig. 1, is formed of aluminium or light alloy strip coated with aluminium-silicon alloy B, the coating being on the outside and the flat edge zones being in contact in the principal plane of the tube. In a modification the edge zones are curved so that line contact is established. In an alternative construction two strips are employed to form the tube H, Fig. 3, the abutting edge zones of which are flat or curved. The inside of the tube may be coated with an aluminium-zinc alloy protective cotaing K. Coated strip may be fed from a reel to a continuous tube forming machine which has a flying shear to cut off individual lengths or alternatively the tubes are formed from pre-cut lengths. Brazing is effected in the course of brazing the heat exchanger matrix.
