Abstract
779,869. Making capsules. TRIFAX, N. V. May 21, 1953 [March 6, 1953; May 2, 1953], No. 14348/53. Class 87(2). [Also in Group VI] Seamless filled capsules having a shell made of gelatin, cellulose ester, polyvinyl alcohol, polyester, vinyl chloride co-polymers or rubber hydrochloride, this shell being filled with fluid, pasty or congealed material, e.g. a solution of vitamin in oil, oily garlic extract or bath perfume, are made by continuously feeding the gelatin &c., which at the working temperature has a viscosity of not more than 1500 centipoises, to a nozzle N, Fig. 1, having an annular orifice and continuously feeding the vitamin &c. through an orifice in the centre of this nozzle, the two materials being fed to the nozzle under a low pressure and leaving the nozzle as composite drops 7 the shells of which are then congealed in a liquid cooling medium 9. The cooling medium may be paraffin oil or peanut oil, and motion may be imparted thereto to prevent contact of the capsules with each other. Large capsules may be produced by supporting the drops, on their emergence from the nozzle, on the surface of the cooling medium. Figs. 2 and 3 show apparatus comprising constant-level reservoirs 11, 14 containing vitamin &c. and gelatin &c. respectively communicating via valve 21 (or a capillary tube) and valve 22 with a central duct 13 and an annular duct 17, the ducts terminating in the nozzle N. The exterior of the nozzle may be coated with a gelatin &c. repellent substance. The end 20 of duct 17 may be screwed up or down to regulate the flow of the gelatin. The gelatin is heated and the vitamin may be heated. A slight superatmospheric pressure may be applied to both supplies of materials. The horizontal nozzle face 24 allows the formation of big capsules. The nozzle may be located at or under the surface of the cooling liquid. The nozzle may be directed upwardly, the cooling liquid being heavy so that the capsules will float upwardly. Specification 779,870 and U.S.A. Specification 2,275,154 are referred to.
