Abstract

779,740. Earth-boring apparatus. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CONSTRUCTION CO., Ltd. Sept. 6, 1955 [Sept. 7, 1954], No. 25954/54. Class 85. An earth-boring rotary auger 22 is pivotally mounted at one end of a jib 20 for turning from a stowage to a boring position in the central longitudinal plane of the jib, which in turn is pivotally mounted about an axis 32 on a turntable 18 mounted on a wheeled carriage 10 that is adjustably mounted on rails 8 extending longitudinally of a mobile chassis 1, 2, 4, 5 and 7. The chassis may be a road vehicle or a well-type railway wagon and the carriage 10 is moved along the rails 8 by a double-acting ram 11, 14 positioned so as to act between the chassis and the carriage. The turntable 18 is rotated by an hydraulically actuated motor, whilst the jib is rotated about the axis 32 by jacks 34. The jib is so balanced that the auger would swing upwards should the jacks 34 fail. The motor for driving the auger and the pump for the hydraulic system is mounted on the jib and is together with the various actuating means controlled from an operator's position 29. A collapsible strut 39 is provided betwen the ground and the outer end of the jib during boring operations.
