In button and like fasteners of the type having fastener members relatively permanently joined to the opposite ends of a shank and wherein inclined opposed tongue-like spring jaws embodied in one or both of the fastener members grip and. jamb against the shank when it is passed between the_ jaws, which are enclosed or encased by a cover plate, the withdrawal of the shank from between the jaws is made possible by providing the cover plate with an aperture or apertures for the insertion of a tool to open or part the said jaws. Fig. 2 shows a wafer like disc 7 of spring-steel with opposed spring-jaws 8 pressed out from the central portion for engagement with the shank 5, Fig. 9, of an ornamental button 10 secured to cloth or other material 3. The disc 7 is located within a conical or domed cover plate 18 provided with a pair of diametrically opposed openings 19 through which opposite fingers 20, Figs. 10 and 11, of a tool 21 may be entered beneath the spring-jaws 8 to prise them apart and allow the withdrawal of the shank and detachment of the respective fastener members. Alternatively the jaws may be levered apart by a narrow screw-driver. The invention is described with reference to various forms of button-like fasteners of the particular type.
