Abstract

779,457. Colour television. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. July 22, 1955 [July 28, 1954], No. 22012/54. Drawings to Specification. Class 40 (3). In a colour television transmission wherein chrominance signals are transmitted within the same frequency band as luminance signals, lowfrequency chrominance signals are transmitted at reduced amplitude relative to higher frequency chrominance signals. The invention has the effect of increasing compatability by: (1) reducing audible " buzz " produced in monochrome receivers by the audio frequency components of the chrominance, signals; and (2) reducing the visibility of the dot structure occurring in the reproduced image at the difference frequency between the luminance and chrominance carriers. In one arrangement, chrominance signals in the range 50-1000 c/s. are attenuated 12 db relative to the remaining signals. In another arrangement effective to reduce the dot structure except on transients, signals in the range 0-100 kc/s. are attenuated 12db. Colour receivers for the transmission are arranged with complementary attenuation characteristics to restore the signal levels. The chrominance signals are conveyed by subcarrier or, preferably by an independent carrier generated by a separate transmitter as in Specication 754,742. When a sub-carrier is used, a colour receiver preferably employs a filter in the luminance channel to remove luminance components within Œ100 kc/s of the sub-carrier.
