Abstract

A diagnostic composition for oral administration to determine gastric acidity comprises a cation exchange resin complexed with the dye 2,6 - diamino - 3 - phenylazopyridine; the dye is liberated when the gastric acids have a pH below 4, being subsequently excreted in the urine. A pad may be moistened with the urine to be tested, and a tablet containing sulphosalicylic acid (or citric, tartaric, or maleic acid), sodium bicarbonate, and boric acid placed on the pad, followed by water; a red coloration indicates presence of the dye. Preferably the cation exchange resin is of the cross-linked polyacrylic, polycarboxylic acid type. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 728,383.
