Abstract

A non-toxic indicator compound for estimating the pH of gastric juice comprises an ion exchange complex synthetic polymer resin having associated therewith at least 0.04 (preferably 0.04-0.5) millimoles of Azure A ions per dose. In an example the indicator compound is prepared by impregnating Amberlite (Registered Trade Mark) cation exchange resin with a solution of Azure A either by a column or a batch method. The indicator compound is given orally and the amount of dye present in the urine is an indication of whether the pH of the gastric juice is above or below a predetermined value.
