Abstract

779,243. Lubricating. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Aug. 19, 1953 [Aug. 19, 1952], No. 20836/52. Class 12 (3). [Also in Groups XXXVII and XXXIX] A method of effecting dry lubrication between a sliding member and another member supported for sliding or relatively sliding engagement therewith, consists in transferring a dry lubricating medium to the mutually engaging surface of one of the members by rubbing action effected between the surface and the medium upon relative sliding movement of the members, the lubricating medium for example, polytetrafluorethylene, being of poor intrinsical electrical conductivity and having a coefficient of friction such that there is formed between the engaging surfaces of the members an electrically thin layer of the dry lubricating medium. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, a wiper switch comprising a wiper brush 4 and contact members 1 arranged between arcuate insulating strips 2, is provided with a wedgeshaped member 7 made of or coated with polytetrafluorethylene. The wiper brush 4 in passing over the contacts picks up the lubricant and deposits a film of it on the contacts. More than one member 7 may be interposed between the contact members. Fig. 2 shows a shaft 8 rotatably mounted in a bearing sleeve 9 and receiving solid lubricant from a block 13 pressed against the shaft by a spring 14. The block may be made of, or coated with, polytetrafluorethylene.
