Abstract

In moulding articles from sinterable materials, e.g. ceramics, metal carbides, cermets, magnetic ferrites, sinterable material is mixed with a thermosetting resin, a thermoplastic resin and a plasticizer, the mixture is moulded, the major part of the materials other than the sinterable constituent is removed by vacuum distillation or extraction with solvents and the residual material is fired to obtain the finished article. There are specified as (1) sinterable materials-alumina, porcelain, rutile, steatite, wollastonite; mixture of alumina, calcium oxide and bentonite, mixture of talc, kaolin, magnesium carbonate and barium carbonate, mixture of kaolin, flint and carbonates of Sr, Mg and Ba., mixture of wollastonite, kaolin and barium carbonate; (2) thermosetting resins-resoles, epoxide resins; (3) thermoplastic resins - novolaks, coumarone-indene, and coumaronestyrene resins; naphthalene formaldehyde resins; (4) plasticizers-waxes, e.g. beeswax and synthetic waxes, butyl stearate, glyceryl monostearate. Examples of moulding compositions are: (1) milled alumina 85-86 per cent, coumarone-indene resin 3-7 per cent, epoxide resin 3.3-4 per cent, wax 3-4 per cent butyl stearate 1.3-2 per cent; (2) and (3) as in (1) with glyceryl monostearate and resole resin; (4) includes a mixture of epoxide, coumaroneindene and novolak resins.ALSO:In moulding articles from sinterable materials, e.g. alumina, the sinterable material is mixed with a thermosetting resin, a thermoplastic resin and a plasticizer, the mixture is moulded, the major part of the materials other than the sinterable constituent is removed by vacuum distillation or extraction with solvents and the residual material is fired to obtain the finished article. There are specified as (1) thermosetting resins - resoles, epoxide resins; (2) thermoplastic resins-novalaks, coumarone - indene, and courmarone - styrene resins; naphthalene formaldehyde resins; (3) plasticizers-waxes e.g. beeswax and synthetic waxes, butyl stearate, glyceryl monostearate. Suitable mixtures are- (1) milled alumina 85-86 per cent, coumarone-indene resin 5-7 per cent, epoxide resin 3.3-4 per cent, wax 3-4 per cent, butyl stearate 1.3-2 per cent (2) and (3) as in (1) with glyceryl monostearate and resole resin; (4) includes a mixture of epoxide, coumarone-indene and novolak resins.
