778,937. Hot-plate stoves; drip pans; electric heating. GENERAL ELECTRIC, CO. Oct. 3, 1955 [Oct. 11, 1954], No. 28111/55. Classes 39(3) and 126 A temperature controlled surface heating unit includes a horizontal utensilsupporting grid 5 comprising a sheathed electric resistance element or a gas-fired unit with a temperature-sensing device 7 centrally located in an aperture therein so as to contact the bottom of a utensil 6 resting on the grid and has a concave drip pan 10 of high thermal conductivity with a central opening defined by an upwardly projecting tubular portion 11 surrounding the device 7; and the upper end of the tubular portion 11 terminates in a horizontal flange 12 positioned normally above the plane of as to lie in the plane of the grid and in resilient contact with the base of the utensil. The drip pan 10 has a peripheral flange 13 carrying leaf springs 14 provided to act upwards against the flange 12 by bearing on a depending horizontal flange 2 of a cooking top 1 of a range and thereby biases the flange 12 into resilient contact with the utensil base. The aluminium drip pan 10 may have base perforations 15. The temperature detector 7 is biased upwards by mounting it on a flat spring 8' secured by straps 9 to the cooking top 1.
