Abstract

778,323. Spinning yarns ; bobbins. BRITISH NYLON SPINNERS, Ltd. Feb. 28, 1956 [March 17, 1955], No. 7826/55. Drawings to Specification. Classes 120 (2) and 120 (3). Yarn consisting of one or more filaments of a synthetic linear high polymeric substance showing visco-elastic properties e.g. a polyamide or polyester, immediately after a stretching operation has been performed thereon, is wound upon a cylindrical bobbin to form a package comprising superposed layers each of which extends slightly beyond the preceding layer at one or both ends of the package to produce a tapered end, the taper angle i.e. the angle between a plane tangential to, or lying along, the surface of the end portion through any point thereon and a plane parallel to the axis of the bobbin and normal to that plane which includes both the axis and the point, not exceeding 30 degrees (preferably 15-30 degrees). The bobbin may comprise a sleeve of wood, rubber, or cardboard, or an outer sleeve of hard rubber concentric with a sleeve of more compressible rubber: according to the Provisional Specification the bobbin may be elliptical in cross-section. It is stated that with the arrangement of layers according to the invention the effects of the delayed retraction of the yarn are uniformly distributed in the package. The form of the package is produced during winding by provision of a gradually increasing traverse stroke from a minimum at the start of the winding to a maximum at the completion thereof: the speed of traverse may be constant, or varied during the winding operation or each stroke and/or in proportion to the length of stroke, and the increases in the stroke may be irregular. In examples in which winding is effected by a reciprocating ring-rail carrying a traveller and coacting with a spindle mounting a single-flanged bobbin, the reciprocation varies from 5 inches to 7¢ or 8 inches, or 5“ inches to 7¥ inches over constant time cycles of from 24 to 10 seconds, to produce taper angles the maxima of which vary from 15 to 23 degrees.
