777,874. Moulding button fastenings in situ. LEHRE, F. Jan. 13, 1955 [Jan. 18, 1954], No. 1128/55. Class 87(2). [Also in Group VII] Buttons are fastened to flexible sheet material by pressing a predetermined quantity of thermosetting plastic in the liquid state through pores or holes in the sheet material and into at least one hole in a button, and permitting the thermosetting plastic to harden. Cuts or pin holes are provided in the sheet material if it is not sufficiently porous for the passage of the liquid plastic therethrough. A spacing member (see Group VII) may be interposed between the button and the sheet material to provide a stem filled with thermosetting plastic. In the example a tubular spacing-member 12 is positioned beneath a button 14 in a centring device 10 within a piston 9 which is reciprocated in a vertical guide 8<SP>11</SP> above a textile, or perforated plastic, sheet on a horizontal arm 1. An orifice 3 in the table is connected by a conduit 4 to a source 6 of liquid thermosetting plastic within a heating-chamber 5 and comprising a piston within a cylinder from which a predetermined quantity of the material is delivered. A solid string or band of plastic material is fed automatically to the heating chamber along a conduit 7 by means of a toothed sector 711 actuated by a lever 7<SP>1</SP>. Buttons 14 may be fed along a horizontal channel 11<SP>1</SP> from a vertical chamber 13 and associated with spacing- members 12 delivered automatically down a vertical channel 11 into the centring device 10. Alternatively, a removable moulding-tool may be positioned between the button and fabric to mould a button stem, the moulding-tool being adapted to be opened and removed after the plastic has hardened. The horizontal arm 1 may be provided with means for cutting or perforating the flexible sheet placed upon it, to provide a passage for the thermoplastic.
