Abstract

777,738. Closure caps. GENERAL MOTORS, Ltd. Sept. 23, 1955 [Oct. 16, 1954 ; May 20, 1955], Nos. 29849/54 and 14610/55. Class 125(3). [Also in Group XXVII] A crankoase breather for an I.C. engine comprises filter material 3 disposed in the space between two inverted cup-shaped members 1, 2, perforations through which air can pass being formed in the top 7 and in a flanged rim 5 of the inner member 1, and a U-shaped spring 10 adapted to enter the access neck of the crankcase having arms 9 extending through slots in the top of the member 1, and a part 11 disposed between the tops of the members 1, 2, the spring 10 being resiliently gripped between the members by deformation of the spring or of one of the members. In Fig. 1 the resilient grip is provided by semi-circular portions on the part 11, the diameters of which are slightly greater than the distance between the tops of the cups. In Fig. 3 (not shown) the spring has an undulation the height of which exceeds the distance between the tops of the cups, the top 7 having two slots for the arms of the spring and two breathing slots. In Fig. 5 the top of the member 1 has a hemispherical deformation 7 resiliently bearing against the top 11 of the spring 10, and in Fig. 7 (not shown) the spring is made of round wire and the part 17 has a groove to locate the wire against the top 4 of the cup 2. The outer cup 2 may have indentations 23, Fig. 11, protruding inwardly so as nearly to meet the wall of the inner cup, whereby the filter material is retained in position.
