Abstract

777,374. Welding electrodes. BRITISH OXYGEN CO., Ltd. Dec. 6, 1955 [Dec. 17, 1954], No. 36591/54. Class 39(3). A nozzle unit 1 containing an arc welding electrode 25 is adjustably clamped to a body portion 2 by a screw 31 extending diametrically through electrically conducting hemispherical elements 20 and 12. The plane. faces of the elements are recessed to provide annular sealing surfaces which are inclined at 45 degrees to the longitudinal axes of the body portion and nozzle. The nozzle can thus be positioned with its axis at any desired angle between 0 and 90 degrees relative the body portion axis. An electrically conductive tube 13 is attached to a spigot 11 integral with the element 12, and at its other end is attached to a connector 14 slotted at 15 to receive the end of a supply cable 16. The latter is surrounded by a flexible insulating tube 17 having an end flange fitting into a groove 18 in the connector. A split collet 24 is screwed to a spigot 21 integral with the element 20 and grips the electrode. An annular spring. washer 35 is located between the annularsealing surfaces. In operation argon gas. is supplied through the tube 17 and flows through the slot 15, tube 13, passages 29, 30 to the nozzle 22 and passes about the electric arc. Caps 36, 37 and tubes 10, 19 all of insulating material surround theelectrically conducting parts.
