Abstract

777,194. Waveguides. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. Aug. 16, 1955 [Aug. 18, 1954], No. 23601/55. Class 40 (8). A surface-wave transmission medium for frequencies within the millimetric range comprises a strip of dielectric material 14 mechanically strengthened by means of a high-resistance metallic core 15 which also serves to prevent mode degeneracy. The dominant mode supported by such medium has a field pattern resembling that of the dominant TE waveguide mode. This mode is not attenuated by the metallic core 15 since the electric field has no component parallel to the axis of the core. Any tendency to degeneracy into a TM mode mode is prevented by the fact that all TM modes produce longitudinal currents in the resistive core and hence are rapidly attenuated. The dielectric strip may be made of an artificial plastic material and the core of the type of resistance wire used in the manufacture of resistance elements. Any metal or alloy having a resistivity greater than 15 X 10<SP>-6</SP> ohms per cm. cube at 20‹ C. may be used for the core. In order to maintain the polarization of the propagated wave the dielectric strip may have a cross-section of unequal orthogonal dimensions, e.g. rectangular or elliptical. The dielectric guide may be coupled to a hollow rectangular guide 16 by means of a rectangular horn 17. A portion of the dielectric guide extends for several wavelengths within the guide 16 and is tapered to improve the match between the guides. Specification 731,473 is referred to.
