Abstract

777,125. Fusible cut-outs; capacitors. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES, Ltd. June 3, 1955 [June 4, 1954], No. 16606/54. Classes 37 and 38 (1). An electric fuse comprises a fine wire 5 wound helically about a flexible insulating thread or bundle of fibres 6 and inserted in an enclosure to provide a thermal insulation from its surroundings. The fuse is for use in a capacitor installation comprising a plurality of seriesarranged groups of parallel-connected capacitors, the whole assembly being immersed in an insulating oil or embedded in a solid insulating medium, a fuse unit as described being connected in series with each capacitor of the assembly. In the construction shown, the fuse unit is inserted in a paper or cardboard tube 2 which is compressed flat and then provided at each end with metal eyelets to which the ends of the fuse wire and terminal leads 4 are soldered. As alternatives, an insulating strip may be wound round the fuse unit, the subsequent insertion of the eyelets preventing unwrapping of the strip, or the enclosure may be made of a suitable synthetic plastic. The liquid used in liquid-immersed installations may be a mineral oil or a chlorinated diphenyl.
