Abstract
777,077. Annealing. UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION. Jan 29; 1955 [Nov. 10, 1954], No. 2533/55. Class 72. Apparatus for controlling the temperature of moving strip comprises a series of hollow rolls round which the strip passes and means for controlling the surface temperature of the rolls so that it increases from the roll at one end to the roll at the other. As shown, a strip passes from an uncoiler 2, round preheating rolls 16A- 16D, through a furnace having a preheating zone 6, a heating zone 8, and a slow cooling zone 10, and round cooling rollers 16E-16J to a coiler 14. A cold liquid, e.g. a non-inflammable oil or a liquid silicone, enters roll 16J and passes through each roll to roll 16E during which it cools the roll surface while being heated itself. It then passes through rolls 16D to 16A giving up its heat and preheating the strip. It may finally return to a tank containing a cooling coil. The temperature of the liquid may be controlled as it enters each roll of the series in the cooling cycle, by means of a pyrometer operating electrical relays to heat or cool the liquid. The apparatus may also be used to dry strip before entering an electrostatic oiler. Specifications 718,738 and 754,478 are referred to.
