At an intermediate point in a television transmission channel a " negative" image is produced and then scanned to produce corresponding signals. This arrangement improves the contrast of the finally reproduced image since the non-linear response of the final picture tube is, in effect, neutralized by a similar response in the intermediate picture tube. " Shading " effects are also wholly or partly corrected since the shading effect of the intermediate pick-up tube is, in effect, opposite to that of the main camera tube. Complete correction of shading effects may be assured by providing a black border surrounding at least two non-parallel sides of the intermediate image produced on the pick-up tube. The arrangement may be employed in film recording apparatus. Specification 776,763, [Group XL (a)], is referred to.
