Abstract

776,587. Surface hardening metal articles. CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO. June 20, 1955 [April 26, 1955], No. 17733/55. Class 72 The thickness of the hardened layer in the surface hardening of metallic article is controlled by subjecting the whole surface to a flow of quenching liquid which contains adjacent zones having different heat extracting properties. As shown, applied to track shoes, the shoes 15 after heating in a furnace 11 pass into quenching device 10 where they are subjected to a flow of quenching liquid over their entire surface, any excess liquid being removed by a scraper 28. The quenching device comprises a tank 31, containing a constant head of liquid, from which the liquid is fed to an elongated narrow orifice 38 defined by an adjustable .plate 37 and a body portion 32. The orifice is further divided into. zones by partitions normal to the opening. The shoes pass through an opening having a shape conforming to the shape of the shoe, the orifice forming the outer edge of the opening. Quench liquid flows out of the orifice over the shoe, the pressure, temperature, or volume of liquid' being controlled in each zone and dependent on the cross-section of the shoe passing the zone. Liquid may be prevented from flowing backwards by a jet of air issuing from a nozzle 66. Prior to entering the quenching chamber selected parts of the shoe e.g. bolt holes, may be subjected to cooling by jets of air through apertures in headers 76 and the lower surface of the shoe may be subjected to a quench before the upper .surface. The shoes may be fed through the device by a system of conveyer rollers driven by motors 13.
