776,576. Radioactivity detectors. FRANCAIS, ETAT. April 27, 1955 [May 7, 1954], No. 12191/55. Class 40 (3). An apparatus for detecting radioactivity which includes an ionization chamber 1, or any other device including at least two electrodes 1, 2 between which is maintained a potential difference which varies under the effect of radioactivity and detecting means, such as an electrometer 4 which is responsive to variations in said potential difference, i.e. characterized in that the potential difference between the electrodes is obtained by a high insulation capacitor r and in that the apparatus includes portable means, such as the magneto G for recharging at intervals of time the capacitor r to a potential higher than that which is critical for operation of the ionization chamber. The circuit for the instrument shown includes a voltage-stabilizing device comprising neon tubes 7 and a strongly insulated reference capacitor C so that by operation of the switch 13 and push-button 11, disposed as in Fig. 4, it is possible, through the action of resistors 3 and 31 to verify if the correct potential has been applied to the capacitor C, if the resistor 3 and the opposing torque of the electrometer have not varied, and if it is necessary to recharge the system, on the potential Ul dropping below the critical value.
