776,557. Vehicle handbrake mechanism. SENTINEL (SHREWSBURY), Ltd., and STEPHENS, E. G. Dec. 16, 1955 Sept. 16,[ 1954], No. 26930/54. Class 103 (1). In a handbrake lever mechanism for vehicles in which the brakes may, if necessary, be applied by repeated strokes of the handbrake lever, an actuating pawl 32 is associated with the brake lever 30 which is normally urged into engagement with the teeth 34 of a rack 35 adapted to move axially in the direction for applying the brake, but in the fully released position illustrated in Fig. 3 is withdrawn from engagement with the teeth of the rack, a holding pawl 39, adapted to be released by hand control 41 and flexible cable connection 42, being provided normally to engage the rack and hold it against movement in the brake releasing direction. In the fully released position of lever 30 illustrated in Fig. 3, the tail 45 of pawl 32 engages a fixed abutment 44 on fixed back plate 37 and the tip of pawl 32 is lifted out of engagement with rack teeth 34. Pulling the hand grip of the lever 30 upwards releases the pawl from abutment 44 and allows its tip to engage ratchet teeth 34 upon further upward movement of the brake lever 30 the rack is moved to the right to apply the brake and is restrained against return movement by the holding pawl 39 while the lever 30 is returned for a further stroke to complete the application of the brake. The brake may be released gradually under the control of the driver by taking the load with the brake lever 30 while the holding pawl is withdrawn by squeezing the hand control 41. The brake may be released in this way to a sufficient extent to release the brake sufficiently for starting off and once the engine has control of the movement of the vehicle the brake lever may be moved to the fully released position. A further embodiment is described and illustrated in the Specification wherein the pawls may be opposed to engage separate ratchet teeth on opposite sides of the rack.
