Abstract

776,251. Anchor-bolts &c. BAYLISS, JONES & BAYLISS, Ltd. Oct. 13, 1954 [Oct. 15, 1953], No. 28413/53. Class 89 (1). A method of installing anchor-bolts, e.g. of the kind disclosed in Specification 776,250, and including a tie-bolt adapted to be anchored at an inner region of a bore-hole, e.g. in a mineroof &c., comprises the steps of anchoring the tie-bolt 11 by causing the head 12 to expand a slit-sleeve 10, acting on the tie-bolt by a manually-operable force-multiplying device or poweroperated device to set up a longitudinal stress in the bolt substantially free of any torsional component and, whilst maintaining this stress, applying a nut 44, cotter, &c. to retain the tension when the device is removed. The device comprises a piston 30 mounted on a tube 29 supported on a rod 22 which has an end 24 engaging the end of bolt 11, e.g. by screwthreads. The piston slides in a cylinder 17 abutting with its end 19 a distance-member 39 comprising two angle-members 41 welded to rings 42, 43. Hydraulic-fluid is supplied to cylinder-space 38 by a remotely-positioned manually-actuated or power-driven pump. A relief-valve in the hydraulic system may be set to blow-off when a predetermined stress has been set up in the bolt. The nut is loosely positioned on the bolt before coupling the bolt and rod 22 and is tightened, without exerting torsion on the bolt, before the tension is relaxed. Expansion is effected, prior to tensioning, by using the device with a tubular part 33, Fig. 1, engaging with one end the sleeve 10 and having at its other end a head 34 against which a part 32 extending from the cylinder-end 19 reacts. Hydraulic-fluid is supplied to space 38 and piston 30 pulls bolt-head 12 into the sleeve. A pressure-gauge may be incorporated in the hydraulic system to give an indication of the resistance to expansion of the sleeve, and hence the security of hold obtained.
